We made a rather surprising observation as judges for the chapter's recent online competition: Several entries showed the classic symptoms of poor editing, which (we assumed) would have been a routine part of any technical communicator's documentation process. Poor editing kept these entries from the winners' circle. Their content may be (and probably is) excellent, but poorly edited entries don't win awards.

The demand for qualified technical writers is constantly growing. For every software application or technology product that's developed, there's an instant need for accompanying documentation. In a global market increasingly dependent on high-tech products and services, it's virtually guaranteed that technical writing opportunities will never run dry.

1. Don’t check a job as though you’re reading the newspaper. You need to read slower than normal to notice, not just misspelt words, but irregular word space, full stops and commas. The smaller the type, the more careful you have to be. Condensed type is always a challenge.

2. Are all the various kinds of headings consistent? Are these the same all the way through your document? Is the space between them the same? Do they employ logical elements of importance, for example are your main headings larger and/or bolder than your subheadings?
